In the summer of 1935, Ed Eliason, also known as “Banjo Ed”, was called to the area of Siren and began to hold open revival meetings. These meetings were held in different houses in the Siren area but soon so many people were attending, they needed to find a more permanent place to meet. The people got together and decided to form a church where Bible truths are preached and taught. Mrs. Spellman’s prayers for changing a Siren dance hall into a Pentecostal church were answered, and The Siren Gospel Tabernacle became a reality.
The first two Evangelists to come to the church were Alta Clift and Adel Newton. They were single ladies gifted in both music and preaching and stayed with the new congregation for a period of time. People came from all over to attend the meetings, which continued one full year, every night except Saturdays, and twice on Sundays.
On September 26th, with the help of John Fossum and many other volunteers from the church, a parsonage was built. A year later the building being used for the church burned and everything in it was destroyed. The people of the church still had their meetings several times a week. They met in a vacant building on the Main Street of Siren and sometimes in a tent. By this time many Evangelists were called to share what God had for His people.
It was time to organize, so on June 30th, 1936 a business meeting was held at the Grantsburg Courthouse and The Siren Gospel Tabernacle became affiliated with the Assembly of God denomination. On April 23, 1937, a meeting was held by Salvatori Noferilto, the pastor of the church at the time, to form a membership for the church. At the meeting, seventeen persons signed as charter members and board members were elected for the new organization
Skipping forward a several years, on March 21, 1978, The Siren Gospel Tabernacle officially became Siren Assembly of God. In 1979, the congregation started plans for a new church and by 1980 the new building was finished and dedicated to the Glory of the Lord.
Many things have happened since the beginning of those revival meetings. People met together with a hunger for the Lord, prayers were answered, a church was built, and people were touched by the presence of the Lord.
At present day Siren Assembly is still a church dedicated to the presence and glory of the Lord. The church body is actively pursuing to be a beacon of hope and love to Siren and the surrounding communities.
